An inherited metabolic disease has been reported in Basset Hounds where glycogen, an energy storage product in the body, accumulates abnormally and excessively in several different tissues, most severely affecting the heart and resulting in sudden death. Research has identified a mutation in the gene RBCK1, which has been associated with an equivalent type of glycogen storage disease seen in humans. All affected dogs have two copies of the mutation.
Jeanna Blake, MS and PhD candidate in genetics at Purdue's College of Veterinary Medicine, will discuss the scientific processes for identifying this newly discovered mutation and for determining whether it warrants wide- spread testing in Basset Hounds.
